Roseville, CA. — A tragic crash on eastbound Interstate 80 early Saturday morning resulted in the death of a 9-year-old girl, with a Sacramento woman arrested for suspected driving under the influence, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The collision occurred around 5:20 a.m. when a 36-year-old Sacramento woman driving a Hyundai Elantra lost control, causing the vehicle to spin out and become disabled in the fast lane. CHP reported that the driver exited the vehicle and began walking along the shoulder of the freeway.
While several vehicles managed to swerve around the stopped Hyundai, a Honda CR-V driven by a 50-year-old man from Fremont was unable to avoid it, leading to a severe collision. The crash left two juveniles in the Honda with injuries, including a 9-year-old girl who was transported to the hospital with major injuries and later died.
CHP officers arrested the woman near the scene on suspicion of DUI. The investigation into the tragic incident remains ongoing.
