San Francisco, CA (June 20, 2026) – One person was killed in a two-car crash on eastbound Interstate 80 just east of the Treasure Island off-ramp in San Francisco early Saturday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The collision was reported at approximately 4:05 a.m. on eastbound Interstate 80 just east of the Treasure Island off-ramp. CHP officials said a Kia and an SUV were involved in the crash. Emergency responders said one person was killed as a result. Responding officers reported major damage to both vehicles, with one sustaining extensive damage along the driver’s side.
A SigAlert was issued at approximately 4:44 a.m., with lanes 1 through 4 blocked. At one point, all eastbound lanes were temporarily closed while emergency crews worked at the scene and investigators processed evidence. Tow trucks were called to remove the damaged vehicles, and Caltrans crews responded for roadway cleanup and inspections before lanes were gradually reopened. All units cleared the scene by approximately 7:57 a.m.
A dog that survived the crash was found at the scene. Officers secured the animal and later transported it to Oakland Animal Services.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. No additional information about the victim has been released.
What to Do After a Fatal Car Accident in California
A fatal two-vehicle collision on Interstate 80 can involve multiple liable parties, overlapping insurance policies, and legal deadlines that cannot wait for an investigation to conclude. Here is what surviving family members need to understand right now.
Can the family pursue a wrongful death claim while the cause of the crash is still under investigation?
Yes. A civil wrongful death claim runs on a completely separate track from a CHP crash investigation. An attorney can independently preserve critical evidence — black box data from both vehicles, traffic and toll camera footage from the I-80 corridor, crash reconstruction analysis, and witness accounts — before that evidence is overwritten or lost. Waiting for the investigation to close is one of the most common and costly mistakes a family can make.
Who could be held liable in a fatal two-vehicle interstate crash?
Liability in a multi-vehicle highway crash is rarely limited to one party. Depending on what the investigation reveals, responsible parties may include:
- The driver of the other vehicle, if negligence is established
- A vehicle manufacturer, if a mechanical defect contributed to the collision
- Caltrans or a road authority, if unsafe highway design, lighting failures, or deferred maintenance on the I-80 corridor played a role
An attorney will identify every viable source of liability and available insurance coverage, not just the most obvious one.
What can a wrongful death claim recover in California?
Under California Code of Civil Procedure § 377.60, surviving spouses, children, and financial dependents may pursue a wrongful death claim covering:
- Funeral and burial costs
- Loss of the financial support the deceased provided to the household
- Loss of love, companionship, comfort, and care
- Medical expenses incurred between the time of the crash and death
What are the filing deadlines?
California’s statute of limitations for wrongful death is two years from the date of death under CCP § 335.1. For a June 20, 2026, fatality, that deadline is June 20, 2028.
However, if Caltrans or another government entity bears any responsibility, through unsafe road conditions, failed lighting, or inadequate lane design, California’s Government Claims Act (Gov. Code § 911.2) requires a separate written notice filed within six months of the incident. That deadline falls on December 20, 2026. Missing it can permanently bar the family from recovering against a government party, regardless of how strong the underlying case is.
