Amador County, CA - Tesla Crosses Into Oncoming Traffic on Highway 104 Near Ione, Killing One and Hospitalizing Three

Amador County, CA (July 22, 2026) – A three-vehicle collision on Highway 104 west of Ione left one person dead and sent a young child and two drivers to area hospitals Wednesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP responded to the crash a little after 7 a.m. near Five Mile Drive. Officers report that a white Tesla traveling northbound crossed into the southbound lane, where it sideswiped a Honda Accord before continuing into oncoming traffic and striking a Cadillac Escalade in a head-on collision.

One person died as a result of the crash. CHP did not specify which vehicle the deceased was in, and their identity has not been released.

A 3-year-old passenger in the Tesla was taken to a hospital for evaluation. The extent of the child’s injuries was not immediately known.

The drivers of the Honda Accord and the Cadillac Escalade were also hospitalized. CHP reported their injuries as minor to moderate.

Why the Tesla crossed into the southbound lane is under investigation, according to CHP.

Highway 104 was closed for several hours following the crash and reopened a little before 11 a.m.

Multi-Vehicle Accidents on California Highways

When a crash involves three vehicles and a head-on impact, liability is rarely straightforward. Multiple insurers enter the picture quickly, each working to limit what their driver owes. The steps you take in the days immediately after the crash determine how much of that liability can be documented and recovered. Here is what matters most right now.

Seek medical care and document everything. Head-on collisions frequently produce injuries that worsen over 48 to 72 hours. A gap in documented treatment becomes an adjuster’s argument that your injuries are unrelated to the crash.

Do not give a recorded statement. The other driver’s insurer may call within days. California law does not require you to provide a recorded statement before speaking with an attorney. Anything you say in that call is used to reduce or deny your claim.

You can still recover even if you share some fault. California follows a pure comparative fault standard. Your damages are reduced by your share of fault, not eliminated. Do not accept an insurer’s early assignment of blame as the final word.

Do not accept the first offer. Opening offers in multi-vehicle crashes rarely reflect the full value of a claim, particularly when medical costs are still accumulating.

The filing deadline is two years. California Code of Civil Procedure § 335.1 gives injury victims two years from the date of the accident to file. Missing that deadline ends your right to recover.

For the family of the person who died: California Code of Civil Procedure § 377.60 allows surviving spouses, domestic partners, children, and certain financial dependents to bring a wrongful death claim. The deadline is two years from the date of death. A wrongful death claim can recover funeral costs, lost financial support, and compensation for loss of companionship and guidance. The cause of this crash is still under investigation. Evidence preservation starts now.
