Hayward, CA (July 21, 2026) – A driver died after an SUV towing a trailer collided with a box truck on westbound Highway 92 near Industrial Boulevard, the California Highway Patrol said.
The crash happened around 3:54 p.m. on the afternoon of July 21 near the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge, according to the CHP. The CHP said a Toyota 4Runner towing a U-Haul trailer was traveling westbound when it collided with a 30-foot box truck.
Investigators said the 4Runner’s driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle in the crash.
Emergency crews took the driver to Sutter Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley while performing CPR. The driver died just before 4:30 p.m. while receiving treatment, according to the CHP.
It was unclear if the box truck’s driver was injured.
Two lanes of Highway 92 were closed until around 7 p.m. following the crash, authorities said.
The cause of the crash has not been released.
