Placer County, CA (October 03, 2025) – One person was killed and three others sustained major injuries Thursday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash on westbound Interstate 80 near Highway 174 in Colfax, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
Authorities reported that a minor passenger died in the crash. The driver and two other passengers were hospitalized with major injuries.
The crash prompted traffic diversions through Colfax, with vehicles rerouted back onto I-80 at Placer Hills Road. Westbound lanes were reopened around 4:00 p.m.
CHP noted that conditions further down the hill in the Applegate area were wet and slick, contributing to a separate big rig crash that partially blocked a westbound lane.
The cause of the Colfax crash remains under investigation.
