Tracy, CA - 22-Year-Old Tracy Man Killed in Four-Vehicle Crash on Kasson Road

Tracy, CA (Oct 17, 2026) – A 22-year-old Tracy man was killed in a four-vehicle crash on Kasson Road, the California Highway Patrol announced. The crash happened around 4:56 p.m. on October 17 when the driver of a Toyota collided with the victim’s Honda. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to CHP, the Toyota was traveling northbound on Kasson Road north of Linne Road when its driver tried to pass a Peterbilt tractor-trailer with insufficient clearance. The Toyota then entered the southbound lanes. The driver of a motorcycle in those lanes swerved onto the west shoulder to avoid it, and the Toyota then struck the Honda, which was driving behind the motorcycle, head-on.

The collision sent the Honda into the motorcycle and the Toyota into the Peterbilt. Both the Honda and the Toyota overturned on the west shoulder, CHP said. The Toyota driver was taken to a hospital with major injuries and was later arrested. CHP said alcohol is suspected to be a factor.

Officers closed Kasson Road around 7:31 p.m. on the day of the crash, and it reopened Saturday morning. CHP is investigating and asks anyone with relevant information to call the Tracy office at 209-319-4300.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

What to Do After a Fatal Car Crash in San Joaquin County

The California Office of Traffic Safety reported 4,061 traffic deaths statewide in 2023, the most recent year with finalized figures. A crash involving four vehicles can bring several insurance companies into the claim, so the early paperwork matters.

  • Request the CHP collision report from the Tracy office at 209-319-4300 and keep a copy of the case number.
  • Ask where the Honda and the Toyota were towed, and ask that the vehicles not be sold for salvage until the investigation is complete.
  • Write down the names and contact details of any witnesses while memories are fresh.
  • Ask nearby businesses whether they kept security video from that stretch of Kasson Road, because many systems overwrite footage within days.
  • Keep receipts for funeral, burial, and related expenses as they come in.
  • Do not give a recorded statement to any insurance adjuster before speaking with an attorney.

Legal Options for a Family After a Fatal Crash on Kasson Road

Several parties may bear responsibility, depending on what the investigation shows. The Toyota driver’s decision to pass a tractor-trailer is at the center of the CHP account. A criminal case against the driver is separate from a civil claim for the family’s losses.

California follows a pure comparative negligence rule. A family can recover damages even if the victim is found partly at fault, with the award reduced by that share. Insurers often assign partial blame to lower what they pay, so the actual legal standard matters.

A wrongful death claim in California generally must be filed within two years of the date of death, which means by October 16, 2028. Kasson Road is a public road. If a claim involves a public entity, such as a road defect or a signage problem, a written government claim must be filed within six months under Government Code section 911.2, which means by April 16, 2027.

A wrongful death claim allows surviving spouses, children, and certain dependent relatives to seek funeral costs, lost financial support, and loss of companionship. A survival claim belongs to the estate and covers losses the victim suffered before death.
