Atwater, CA - Woman and Child Killed in DUI Crash at Southern Pacific Ave

Atwater, CA (June 1, 2025) – A suspected DUI crash at Southern Pacific Avenue and Commerce Avenue killed a 20-year-old woman and a 3-year-old child, the California Highway Patrol reports.

The collision occurred around 10:35 p.m. Sunday when a speeding, impaired driver failed to stop at the intersection and struck another vehicle. Emergency responders pronounced both victims dead at the scene.

Officers arrested 19-year-old Moises Haven Castillo of Catheys Valley on charges including DUI, hit-and-run, and vehicular manslaughter. Investigators continue to probe how excessive speed, alcohol impairment, and the failure to stop contributed to the fatal crash.

We extend our deepest sympathies to the victims’ families and loved ones.
