Altadena, CA (August 24, 2025) – Two people were hospitalized Sunday evening after their car plunged approximately 1,000 feet down a hillside along the Angeles Crest Highway, authorities said.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) was alerted to the crash at mile marker 38 around 6:18 p.m., thanks to the iPhone crash detection feature of one of the vehicle’s occupants. This feature uses sensors to detect significant impacts and automatically contacts emergency services after a brief delay.
Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel, alongside search and rescue teams, responded quickly and located the vehicle down the steep hillside. Good Samaritans reportedly assisted by climbing down to check on the occupants before emergency crews arrived.
Both victims were transported to local hospitals, one by helicopter and the other by ambulance. Their conditions were not immediately available.
The CHP issued a Sigalert shortly after 7 p.m., temporarily shutting down all lanes near Barley Flats Road. Traffic was reopened approximately 30 minutes later.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
