Coalinga, CA (June 19, 2025) – One person was killed Thursday night in a three-car crash that sparked a wildfire along Interstate 5 near Highway 145, according to authorities.
The collision ignited nearby vegetation, triggering the Coal Fire, which has burned over 90 acres. Strong winds contributed to the rapid spread of flames, with video showing dust blowing across the highway moments before the fire erupted.
Traffic was halted in both directions as authorities closed northbound and southbound lanes of I-5. The California Highway Patrol issued alerts advising stranded drivers to leave their vehicles if they felt unsafe. Officials later confirmed that only the vehicles involved in the crash were overtaken by flames.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
