San Diego, CA (September 22, 2025) – A fatal traffic collision occurred early this morning on southbound I-5 near Basilone, California Highway Patrol (CHP) confirmed. The crash was reported shortly after 12:23 a.m..
Emergency responders found that the incident involved a vehicle striking a pedestrian on the highway. Initial reports indicated that the pedestrian was walking towards vegetation near the main lanes when the collision occurred.
All southbound lanes were temporarily closed while crews responded to the scene, set up traffic flares, and managed the roadway. The CHP coordinated the response and requested towing services from SandR Tow for evidence collection.
The CHP confirmed a fatality at the scene. Further details regarding the identity of the victim have not been released.
