[04-03-2025] - Semi Truck Catches Fire in Crash on US Highway 101 South in Novato

Novato, CA — A major traffic incident involving a white semi truck caused significant delays on US Highway 101 South in Novato this morning after the truck’s trailer detached and caught fire.

The crash occurred between Ignacio Boulevard and the Vallejo exit, blocking at least four lanes and leading to a substantial backup during peak commute hours.

California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the Department of Transportation (DOT) responded quickly to the scene. The fire generated large flames and thick smoke, prompting crews to act swiftly to secure the area and prevent further damage.

Emergency teams managed to reopen one lane by late morning, but traffic delays remained heavy as cleanup and towing operations continued. The semi truck was declared undriveable, and a tow truck was deployed to assist with removal.

“Crews are working diligently to ensure roadway safety and restore normal traffic flow,” CHP officials said.

As of the latest update, CHP and DOT units remain on site. The incident is under review to determine how the trailer detached and what sparked the fire. No injuries have been reported at this time.
