Merced, CA (June 3, 2025) – A 27-year-old man riding a bicycle was killed when a white pickup truck struck him on Belcher Avenue just east of Highway 59, the California Highway Patrol reports.
The collision occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The 23-year-old driver of a 2012 Toyota Tacoma fled the scene but was located hours later at his Merced residence, where he remained in custody pending investigation. Witnesses and CHP detectives say the bicyclist, wearing dark clothing and riding a silver BMX-style bike without reflectors, was traveling eastbound when the truck, following behind, failed to see him until impact.
Emergency personnel pronounced the victim dead at the scene. The CHP is investigating whether poor visibility or driver inattention contributed to the crash and is determining any pending charges.
