Oakland, CA – Pedestrian Fatally Struck by Vehicle on Northbound I-880

Pedestrian Killed on I-880 in Oakland Near 29th Avenue

Oakland, CA (Sept. 18, 2026) – A pedestrian died after being struck by a vehicle Friday evening on the 880 Freeway in Oakland, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The crash occurred around 8:15 p.m. on September 18, 2026, in the northbound lanes of the freeway near 29th Avenue. According to CHP, the pedestrian was in the traffic lanes for an unknown reason when a vehicle struck them, resulting in fatal injuries.

The driver involved stopped at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Two right lanes of the freeway were closed during the investigation.

The circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation.

Our thoughts are with the pedestrian’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.

Fatal Pedestrian Accidents on California

When a pedestrian is struck and killed on a freeway, and the reason they were in the roadway is unclear, families are often left with painful, unanswered questions. Here’s what’s important to understand as this investigation continues.

Fault has not yet been determined. Since the reason the pedestrian was in the traffic lanes is unknown, it would be premature to assume responsibility lies with either the driver or the pedestrian. A careful, independent investigation into visibility, driver reaction time, roadway conditions, and any surveillance footage is important before conclusions are drawn.

Wrongful death claims may apply. If the investigation shows the driver’s negligence, such as speeding, distraction, or failure to keep a proper lookout, contributed to the crash, the surviving family may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim.

Freeways present unique challenges. Because freeways aren’t designed for pedestrian traffic, these cases often require specialized investigation into how and why a pedestrian ended up in the roadway, along with a close look at driver conduct and vehicle speed at the time.

Evidence should be preserved early. Surveillance footage, vehicle data, and physical evidence at a freeway crash scene like this one can be lost or overwritten quickly. An attorney can help ensure this evidence is identified and preserved while facts are still being gathered.

Time limits matter. California generally allows two years from the date of a crash to file a claim, though early legal guidance can help protect evidence and strengthen a case from the start.

Every case is different, and no outcome can be guaranteed. But understanding your options as early as possible is one of the most important steps a grieving family can take.
