Multi-Vehicle Accidents in San Jose, California
In a four-vehicle collision, the hardest question is usually the order of impacts. Who struck first, who was pushed, and who had nowhere to go. That sequence decides who pays, and it is rarely obvious from the wreckage.
Here is what matters most in the first weeks after a crash like this:
- See a doctor the same day, even if the injuries seem minor. Neck, back, and internal injuries often surface later, and a same-day record ties them to the collision.
- Ask that the vehicles be preserved before they are released. The event data recorder in each one stores speed and braking in the seconds before impact, and it is often the only objective account of the sequence.
- Look for camera footage early. Caltrans freeway cameras, nearby business cameras, and dashcams from uninvolved drivers are usually overwritten within days or weeks.
- Do not give a recorded statement to any of the other insurers, and do not accept an early offer. In a pileup, several insurers may call, each trying to shift responsibility elsewhere.
More than one party can share responsibility in a chain-reaction crash. California follows a pure comparative fault rule. A person found partly at fault can still recover damages, reduced by their percentage of fault, with no cutoff.
That rule matters while a cause is still undetermined. An injured person should not assume a claim is closed simply because CHP has not yet said what happened. The investigation, not a first assumption, sets the outcome.
Four vehicles can also mean four insurance policies with limits that do not stretch far. Underinsured motorist coverage on an injured person’s own policy often becomes part of the claim. A California personal injury lawyer can identify every available policy before anyone signs a release.
Personal injury claims in California must generally be filed within two years of the date of the crash (CCP 335.1). For a crash on September 28, 2026, that deadline is September 28, 2028.
