San Jose, CA – Richard Killed, Julia Injured in Hit-and-Run on South Almaden Ave

San Jose, CA (May 30, 2025) – A hit-and-run crash on South Almaden Avenue at West Virginia Street killed a 72-year-old man and injured a woman, the San Jose Police Department reports.

The collision occurred around 2:45 a.m. Friday when a speeding car struck Richard E., who was using a motorized wheelchair, and his housemate, Julia A., as they navigated the roadway near parked cars.

Emergency crews transported Julia A. to a nearby hospital with hand injuries. Richard E. was taken to the ICU, where he later died from his injuries. Officers arrested the driver a short distance away at his home.

Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash and whether speed or other factors contributed.
