Modesto, CA - Sedan and Tractor-Trailer Collide on Northbound I-5 in Stanislaus County, One Airlifted to Hospital

Modesto, CA (Aug 26, 2026) – One person was airlifted to a hospital following a crash that briefly shut down northbound Interstate 5 in Stanislaus County Wednesday evening, officials said.

The California Highway Patrol’s Modesto office responded to the freeway just south of Stuhr Road, where a sedan and a tractor-trailer were involved in the collision. Video released by the CHP shows heavy damage to the sedan along with a significant amount of debris covering the lanes.

The driver of the sedan was transported to an area hospital by helicopter. Their condition was not immediately known. No other injuries were reported.

As of 5:15 p.m., CHP confirmed that traffic control was in place and northbound traffic was moving again. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Our thoughts are with the driver and their family during this difficult time.

What Are Your Legal Options After a Truck Crash in California?

Crashes involving large commercial trucks are often more complicated, and more severe, than typical car accidents. If you or a loved one were injured in a collision with a tractor-trailer on I-5 or anywhere in Stanislaus County, there are important factors to understand.

Commercial trucking cases involve more than one party. Unlike a typical two-car crash, truck accident claims can involve the driver, the trucking company, and sometimes a separate company that owns or maintains the trailer. Federal and state trucking regulations, driver logs, and maintenance records may all play a role in determining what happened and who is responsible.

Injuries from truck crashes tend to be severe. Because of the size and weight difference between a passenger vehicle and a tractor-trailer, injuries in these crashes are often serious and can involve long hospital stays, surgery, and extended recovery. Compensation may be available to help cover medical treatment, lost income, and pain and suffering.

Evidence disappears fast. Trucking companies and their insurers often send investigators to the scene within hours of a crash. Skid marks, debris fields, and vehicle data recorders (similar to a “black box”) can provide critical evidence, but that evidence can be lost, moved, or overwritten quickly. Speaking with an attorney early can help protect that evidence before it’s gone.

Time limits apply. California generally allows two years from the date of a crash to file a claim, though truck accident cases often benefit from an early investigation while facts are still fresh.

Every case is different, and no outcome can be guaranteed. But understanding your options as early as possible gives you the best chance to protect your rights.
