Galt, CA - Driver Killed After Sedan Strikes Semi-Truck and Catches Fire on Highway 99

Galt, CA (Sept. 29, 2026) – One person died in a fiery crash involving a car and a big rig in Galt on the morning of September 29, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP responded to reports of a crash between a sedan and a big rig around 4:08 a.m. on southbound Highway 99, south of Twin Cities Road.

The investigation determined that the driver of the sedan was traveling in the far-right lane when it drifted and sideswiped a slower-moving construction attenuator truck that was traveling in the far-left lane, CHP said.

The car veered to the right, across all lanes, before leaving the highway and coming to rest on West Stockton Boulevard, CHP said. The sedan was directly in the path of an oncoming semi-tractor trailer, which was unable to avoid the car, resulting in a crash.

Officers said the car then caught on fire. Despite life-saving efforts, the driver of the car died. The driver of the big rig was not hurt.

The crash is under investigation. It is currently unknown if alcohol or drugs were a contributing factor, CHP said.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has additional information is encouraged to contact the CHP South Sacramento Area at 916-897-5600.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Fatal Truck Accidents in Galt, California

A first account from the scene describes a sequence. It does not explain what caused it, and families are often told to accept it as final long before the investigation closes.

In a crash involving commercial vehicles, these are the questions a reconstruction is built to answer:

  • Why did the vehicle leave its lane. Medical emergency, a tire or steering failure, a mechanical defect, and fatigue all produce the same drift, and each points in a different legal direction.
  • Where the other vehicles were and why. Speed, lane position, lighting, warning devices, and the operating practices of any work vehicle on the roadway are all part of the record.
  • What the trucks recorded. A commercial vehicle stores engine data, speed, and braking, and carries driver logs, dispatch records, inspection reports, and company safety policies under federal rules.
  • What the physical evidence shows. Tire marks, debris fields, and vehicle damage patterns establish the order and severity of each impact, and they are documented once, then gone.

California follows a pure comparative fault rule. A person found partly responsible can still recover damages, reduced by their percentage of fault, with no threshold that cuts recovery off entirely.

That rule is why families in this position are so often wrong about their options. Even where a preliminary account puts a loved one at the start of a sequence, a wrongful death claim is not automatically closed. The percentages are decided by the evidence, not by a first report.

Commercial and construction vehicles also carry records that disappear on a schedule. Driver logs, telematics data, and maintenance files are kept for fixed retention periods and are routinely destroyed once those lapse. A Sacramento County truck accident lawyer can send preservation letters to every company involved before the clock runs out.

A wrongful death claim in California must generally be filed within two years of the date of death (CCP 377.60).
