Rio, CA (Aug 21, 2026) – A man died, and a woman was hospitalized following a two-vehicle collision Friday afternoon in the Rio Linda area of Sacramento County, according to officials.
Emergency crews were called to the 2100 block of Elkhorn Boulevard, just north of Sacramento International Airport, at approximately 2:02 p.m. after reports of a serious crash, the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District confirmed. One person was pronounced dead at the scene, while a second person was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of significant injuries.
The California Highway Patrol reported that a woman driving a sedan westbound on Elkhorn Boulevard lost control of her vehicle while attempting to pass other traffic. Her car crossed the center median and struck an oncoming sedan driven by a man, who died as a result of the crash. The woman suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
CHP investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. The investigation into the exact cause remains ongoing.
Our thoughts are with the family of the man who lost his life, and with everyone affected by this tragic collision on Elkhorn Boulevard.
What Are Your Legal Options After a Fatal Crash in California?
Losing a loved one in a sudden, preventable crash is devastating, and in the middle of grief, most families have no idea what to do next. If someone you love was killed or seriously injured in a crash caused by another driver in Sacramento County, California law may allow you to pursue compensation. There are important steps and deadlines to understand.
Wrongful death claims. When a crash like this results in a death, the surviving family, including a spouse, children, or in some cases parents, may have the right to file a wrongful death claim against the at-fault driver. This can help cover funeral and burial costs, lost financial support, and the profound loss of companionship and guidance.
Injury claims for survivors. If you or a family member were injured, even if your injuries seem minor at first, you may be entitled to compensation for medical treatment, lost income, pain, and ongoing recovery.
Time limits matter. California generally gives victims and families two years from the date of the crash to file a claim, but insurance companies often move fast to limit what they pay. Evidence like skid marks, vehicle data, and witness accounts can disappear quickly. Speaking with an attorney early, even just to understand your options, can make a real difference.
Dealing with insurance adjusters. Insurance companies are not on your side. Adjusters may contact grieving families within days of a crash, hoping for a quick, low settlement before the full extent of damages and losses is known. You are never obligated to accept the first offer, and you’re not required to speak with an insurance adjuster without guidance.
Every case is different, and no outcome can be guaranteed. But understanding your rights early is one of the most important things you can do for your family.
