Encinitas, CA (October 08, 2025) – A man is facing DUI charges after a serious crash Wednesday evening sent a child to the hospital and caused significant damage to Gelato 101, a dessert shop on South Coast Highway 101, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department reported.
The incident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. near South Coast Highway 101 and West D Street when 64-year-old Edward De La Torre was driving a 2026 Chevy Silverado northbound and rear-ended a 2022 Toyota Prius. The impact caused the Silverado to veer off the road and crash into Gelato 101 at 480 S. Coast Highway 101.
Inside the building, a male juvenile was struck by the truck and trapped underneath it. First responders freed the child, who was conscious and breathing at the scene. He was taken to Rady Children’s Hospital for evaluation. His current condition is unknown.
De La Torre was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and later arrested on suspicion of DUI. Paramedics evaluated the Prius occupants, who did not appear hurt.
The investigation is ongoing.
