Placer County, CA – Semi-Truck Crash Injures 7, Shuts Down I-80 Near Baxter

Crash on Interstate 80 in Placer County

Placer County, CA (July 20, 2026) – A semi-truck collided with multiple vehicles on westbound Interstate 80 near Baxter, then left the road and went down an embankment, according to Cal Fire NEU.

The crash happened around 1:50 p.m. on the afternoon of July 20, the California Highway Patrol said.

Five vehicles and three big rigs were involved, according to the CHP. Two people suffered moderate-to-major injuries and five suffered minor injuries. All seven were taken to the hospital.

Caltrans District 3 said westbound I-80 was shut down about 2.1 miles east of Baxter following the crash. One lane reopened just after 8 p.m. that evening.

The other lane remained closed for hazmat remediation and vehicle recovery, according to Caltrans.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

A highway crash involving a big rig can leave everyone caught up in it facing injuries, medical bills, and questions about who is responsible.

Semi-Truck Accidents in Interstate 80, Northern CA

A crash involving a semi-truck and several other vehicles often involves more than one responsible party. Liability is not always limited to the truck driver.

  • The trucking company may be liable for hiring, training, or scheduling decisions that pushed a driver past safe limits.
  • Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) rules govern driver hours, vehicle maintenance, and cargo securement, and violations can support a claim.
  • A cargo loader or maintenance contractor may share fault if a mechanical failure or an unsecured load played a role.
  • California follows a pure comparative fault rule, so a driver can still recover damages even if partly at fault for a multi-vehicle pileup.

Anyone injured in a crash like this should see a doctor promptly, avoid giving a statement to the trucking company’s insurer, and preserve evidence such as photos, medical records, and dashcam footage before it disappears. Under California law, personal injury claims like this one generally must be filed within two years of the crash (CCP § 335.1). For this crash on July 20, 2026, that deadline falls on July 20, 2028.
