Sacramento County, CA (Sept. 27, 2026) – Around 5:30 a.m. on the morning of September 27, the California Highway Patrol responded to a two-car collision on State Route 160 near Sherman Island Cross Road, south of Rio Vista. A woman was killed, and two other people were hospitalized.

According to California Highway Patrol, a black Kia Forte veered from the northbound lanes and directly into the path of a white Ford F250 pickup truck in the southbound lanes. Photos from CHP show the truck appeared to be pulling equipment.

The sole occupant of the Kia was pronounced dead due to injuries from the crash. The two people inside the truck were sent to a hospital with unknown injuries.

It is unknown whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash, CHP said.

CHP initially closed SR-160 after the collision. All lanes were open as of 9:40 a.m.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Car Accidents in Sacramento County, California

A crash that closes a state highway for hours leaves behind evidence that does not last. Vehicles are towed, released, repaired, or scrapped. Skid marks and gouges on the roadway fade within days.

Here is what usually matters most in the first weeks after a collision like this one:

  • See a doctor right away, even if you walked away. Chest, spine, and internal injuries from a high-speed impact often show up hours or days later. A same-day medical record also ties the injury to the crash.
  • Do not give a recorded statement to the other driver’s insurance company. Adjusters call early and ask questions designed to lock in an account before anyone knows the full picture.
  • Preserve the evidence before it disappears. That means the CHP collision report, photographs of both vehicles before repair, the event data recorder in each vehicle, any dashcam footage, and records showing whether a vehicle was being used for work at the time.
  • Do not accept a settlement offer before an attorney reviews it. Early offers rarely account for future surgery, lost earnings, or permanent limitations.

Fault is not always a single answer. California follows a pure comparative fault rule. A person found partly responsible can still recover damages, reduced by their share of the fault.

That rule matters when an investigation is still open. It means a family should not assume a claim is closed to them because of a preliminary account. It also means the occupants of a struck vehicle have a claim to pursue even while the cause is still being examined.

When a pickup is towing equipment, investigators also look at whether the vehicle was in commercial or work use. If it was, an employer’s insurance policy and its maintenance records may come into the case. A Sacramento County wrongful death attorney can request those records before they are routinely purged.

Personal injury claims in California must generally be filed within two years of the date of the crash (CCP 335.1). For a crash on September 27, 2026, that deadline is September 27, 2028. A wrongful death claim carries the same two-year window from the date of death (CCP 377.60), which here is also September 27, 2028.
