Sonora, California (July 30, 2026) – A 39-year-old Jamestown man died after a head-on collision between two vehicles on Highway 108 in Sonora, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP Officer James Dixon said the crash was reported just before 1:30 p.m. on July 30, on Highway 108 behind the Walmart Supercenter in the Crossroads Shopping Center near Sanguinetti Road. At least one ambulance responded, and Cal Fire was notified.
Westbound traffic on Highway 108 was stopped at the Lower Mono Way exit, and eastbound traffic was stopped at Washington Street while officers worked the scene. The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office also responded, and a sergeant was still waiting on a coroner’s representative more than an hour after the crash was first reported.
The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office coroner later identified the man who died as Michael Albert Barreno, 39, of Jamestown. The CHP had not yet released a formal statement on what caused the two vehicles to collide head-on, and no information on the condition of the second driver had been made public as of this report.
