Sacramento, CA (April 9, 2024) – Following a pedestrian collision in the south Sacramento region on Tuesday morning, the police department reported that a man had died and a woman had suffered critical injuries.
A portion of Fruitridge Road was blocked between Ethel and Laurine Ways due to the collision, which was reported shortly after 4:30 a.m., according to the Sacramento Police Department. One of the two victims hit by the vehicle involved, identified only as an adult female, was in a wheelchair, per officers. Police added that the woman was in critical condition at a local hospital while the other victim, a man, later passed away. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities, though the roadway was blocked as officers continued their on-scene inquiry.
We extend our deepest condolences to the deceased man’s family. Our thoughts are with the injured victim and her loved ones at this time.
Fatal Pedestrian Accidents in Sacramento
It is not unusual to see a pedestrian strolling beside a road, city street, or close to built areas in California. This is particularly true given the state’s generally moderate climate year-round. No matter how familiar the sight, however, accidents occur quite frequently due to the closeness between these walkers and vehicles driving along our highways.
Pedestrians may suffer serious or even fatal injuries, particularly because they are not protected by a vehicle or safety features like airbags. Unfortunately, California became the eighth worst state for pedestrian injuries and deaths in the United States over the last several years, with more than 1,000 pedestrian fatalities documented during the prior five years alone. Moreover, the Sacramento metropolitan region, which has 2.4 million residents, is the eighth worst state in the nation for pedestrians, according to the most recent census.
