Orangevale, CA (July 5, 2024) – A pedestrian was killed this week in Orangevale after a vehicle collision, authorities said, and officers have since released further details in connection with the incident on Thursday.

According to the CHP’s dispatch log, officers with the California Highway Patrol were called just before 7:50 a.m. for reports of a man struck by a vehicle. A Ford Fusion sustained windshield damage after the collision near the intersection of Hazel Avenue and Greenback Lane, though its driver did not suffer any injuries, the CHP said. The man was walking on a raised center on Hazel Avenue, south of Greenback Lane when the Fusion struck him for unknown reasons, said Officer Trent Senter, a CHP’s East Sacramento office spokesman.

The man was taken to a hospital where he died from his injuries, Senter said. His identity is still expected to be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office once relatives are notified of his death. Alcohol and drugs were not factors contributing to the collision, the CHP confirmed, though the investigation is ongoing.

We extend our deepest condolences to the deceased man’s family.

Pedestrian Accidents in California

Throughout California, it is not uncommon to encounter a pedestrian strolling along a road, municipal street, or near developed areas. This is especially true considering the state’s consistently temperate climate throughout the year. Nevertheless, despite the pedestrians’ universal recognition, collisions involving them and vehicles traversing our thoroughfares are common.

Pedestrians are particularly susceptible to severe or potentially fatal injuries in the absence of vehicle protection or safety features such as airbags. Regrettably, California has positioned itself as the ninth most hazardous state in terms of pedestrian injuries and fatalities across the United States in recent years. In the preceding five years alone, over a thousand pedestrian fatalities were recorded. Moreover, according to the most recent census, the Sacramento metropolitan area, which has 2.4 million inhabitants, ranks ninth worst for pedestrians in the United States.
