Sacramento, CA (August 19, 2024) – According to California Highway Patrol reports, one person is dead, and two others are in the hospital after a chain-reaction crash along Interstate 80 in Sacramento.

Per officials with the Sacramento Fire Department, the crash happened on eastbound Interstate 80, just west of Interstate 5. Fire officials said five vehicles were involved, three of which caught fire, and two people were taken to the hospital. CHP troopers said a driver in a pickup truck was going eastbound along I-80 and didn’t see that traffic was stopped ahead.

The driver crashed into the rear of a Toyota Tacoma, which then caused a chain reaction with three other cars. Police said the Tacoma driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Another person had major injuries, and the initial pickup driver had minor injuries. The driver who died hasn’t been identified at this time, and DUI is not suspected as a factor.

We extend our deepest condolences to the deceased victim’s family. Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.

Motor Vehicle Accidents in Sacramento

Regrettably, car accidents occur often in Sacramento. Accident data indicate that this vibrant city seems to be more concerned with road safety due to its dense population and crowded freeways. Having access to this data on major and small traffic accidents would help to clarify Sacramento’s startlingly high accident rate. Sadly, a significant percentage of these crashes end in deaths or, worse, serious injuries to all those involved.

Driving in Sacramento is at once exciting and intimidating. Being the state capital of California, it serves as a major center for travel, business, and transportation. The city has a vast network of thoroughfares and roadways, yet even with this, traffic may become backed up during rush hour. Cars in Sacramento have to drive carefully and alertly alongside thousands of other vehicles on the road.
