Sacramento, CA (September 14, 2024) – A woman was in critical condition after she was hit by a vehicle in south Sacramento on Thursday evening, according to the Sacramento Police Department.

Emergency crews responded to the crash on Sutterville Road near 21st Street around 9:05 p.m. Police said officers did CPR on the woman before she was taken to an area hospital. The woman was in critical but stable condition.

The driver remained on scene after the crash, police said. Sacramento police said Sutterville Road between Freeport Boulevard and 23rd Street was closed and asked drivers to avoid the area. Officers have not released details about the driver or pedestrian involved in the meantime, though anyone with information regarding the collision was asked to call local officials as the officers’ inquiry proceeded.

Our thoughts go out to the injured victim and her family members. We hope for her complete recovery.

Pedestrian Accidents in California

It’s common to see a pedestrian walking along a neighborhood thoroughfare, municipal street, or near developed roadway areas in California. This is particularly true in light of the state’s year-round temperate climate. However, despite the pedestrians’ universal presence and recognition by drivers, collisions between pedestrians and vehicles traveling through our state happen all too frequently.

In the absence of vehicle protection or safety features, such as airbags, pedestrians are particularly vulnerable to severe or potentially fatal injuries. Regrettably, California has become the ninth most hazardous state in the United States in terms of pedestrian injuries and fatalities in recent years. Over one thousand pedestrian fatalities were documented in the five years prior. Additionally, the Sacramento metropolitan area, which has a population of 2.4 million, is the tenth most dangerous for pedestrians in the United States, as indicated by the most recent census. Every time pedestrians traverse the roadways of the Golden State, they are exposed to a significant risk.
