Ceres, CA (May 15, 2024) – One person is in the hospital after a collision between a bicyclist and a car Wednesday afternoon in Ceres.
The Ceres Police Department said the collision was reported around 3:00 p.m. along Mitchell Road, north of Hatch Road. The bicyclist, a 59-year-old man, sustained significant injuries when police arrived. He was treated by first responders until being taken to the hospital in critical condition. Police said the bicyclist was crossing Mitchell Road at Adrien Way over the center median when he was hit by a Chevy Suburban heading north on Mitchell. The driver in the collision is cooperating with investigators, and police said alcohol doesn’t appear to be a factor in the crash.
Our thoughts go out to the injured victim and their loved ones. We hope for their full recovery.
Pedestrian Accidents in California
Pedestrians walking along roadways, municipal thoroughfares, or near vehicles are frequently observed throughout the state of California. This is particularly true considering the state’s temperate climate, which remains constant throughout the year. Nevertheless, collisions between pedestrians and vehicles traversing our thoroughfares are common, and these collisions often result in serious injuries or even deaths.
Pedestrians are especially vulnerable to severe or potentially fatal injuries because they lack the safety features or protection of typical passenger vehicles. Unfortunately, in recent years, California has gained the position of the ninth most dangerous state nationwide for pedestrian fatalities and injuries. At least 1,000 pedestrian fatalities were documented in the prior five years. Additionally, the tenth least pedestrian-friendly region in the United States is the Sacramento metropolitan area.
